The joy of free play

Free play is the answer to many of the problems we face in today’s society: poor physical and mental health, low resilience, growing loneliness. But we mustn’t overlook the number one reason children should have access to play: Pure Joy!

Think back to the last time you saw a bunch of kids at a birthday party. The excitement and sparkle in their eyes as they’re immersed in a whirlwind of joy, where everything else seems to fade away.

So what is it that makes play so enjoyable for kids?

Being in the moment
When kids play together, they become fully engaged in the activity. They are in deep state of flow, where they lose track of time.

Being spontaneous
The spontaneous nature of group play leads to unexpected mishaps and silliness. Laughter is infectious, the mutual giggling and laughing at each other’s jokes or funny expressions create a carefree atmosphere.

Belonging
Playing together gives kids a sense of belonging. They feel included and accepted, which brings a deep sense of happiness.

Taking risks
Running around, chasing each other provides a rush of adrenaline. The physical exercise coupled with the presence of friends leads to high-energy fun.

Freedom to express
Play allows kids to express a range of emotions freely. They can be silly, loud, and expressive without any constraints, which is liberating and fun.
